Considered the most sacred place for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, Temple of the Tooth Relic houses the left canine tooth of Lord Buddha. It is said that Buddhism was truly established in ancient Ceylon with the symbolical transference of the tooth from India to Sri Lanka. The temple was named as a world heritage site by UNESCO and is venerated by thousands of local and foreign devotees who visit daily and pay homage to Lord Buddha. The temple, which is popularly known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa is located in the royal palace complex of the ancient kingdom of Kandy.
