Poised on top of the large Panhalgala rock with sweeping views on all sides, the Lankatilaka Temple is another outstanding architectural edifice built in the 14th century BC and one of the most fascinating places to visit in Kandy, Sri Lanka. With a chief architect of South India origin, the temple’s architecture also reflects Dravidian, Indo Chinese architecture as well as Polonnaruwa era styles. Initially a four storied structure, it now stands tall at three, with its outer walls are embellished with traditional Sinhalese sculptures and motifs while the indoor image houses consist of a status depicting Buddha’s past lives and can be entered through a dragon arch.
